Creative and Self-Expression

Inspiring individuality and growth.

We believe that creativity is at the core of individuality and self-discovery. That’s why self-expression through art, music, drama, sports, and other creative pursuits is a vital part of our curriculum. By encouraging pupils to explore a range of expressive activities, both in the classroom and beyond, we nurture their confidence, creativity, and personal growth.

Throughout the school day, pupils actively participate in various creative and physical activities - from art, drama, and dance to sports and music groups. They have the chance to think creatively, build teamwork skills, and express themselves through a wide range of channels, including peripatetic music lessons, school clubs, and co-curricular activities.

Each experience is designed to empower our pupils to embrace who they are and discover new ways to connect with the world around them.

Music & Drama

Our pupils benefit from weekly music and drama lessons taught by specialist staff. These dedicated sessions allow pupils to explore their artistic abilities and develop their creative skills.

Each year, all classes participate in a school production, providing pupils with opportunities to boost their confidence while engaging in theatrical experiences.

In Early Years, our pupils have the wonderful opportunity to attend London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concerts, which allows them to explore the world of music and performance.

Throughout the year, we also host various external companies at our school to enhance our pupils' theatrical experiences and ignite their imaginations. These include the Little Angel Puppet Theatre and OperaEd, who provide them with an immersive experience in the world of opera.

Our Upper House host the prestigious Premier Performance in the stunning St Giles’ Church, Cripplegate. This event allows our pupils to showcase their talents, including singing, recitation, or playing musical instruments of their choice.

We offer private music lessons in a variety of instruments, including:
Flute Clarinet
Recorder Piano
Saxophone Singing
It is truly a wonderful school and I feel very lucky that my daughter has been educated here.

Visual Arts

Our commitment to artistic expression extends to the visual arts.

All our pupils benefit from weekly art lessons, which are taught by either specialist staff or their class teachers. Our Creative Studio opens up a world of possibilities for pupils to explore various artistic mediums, including clay, papier mâché, pastels, charcoal, glass/silk painting. These art lessons are often linked to topic work, like creating letter illuminations when studying the Medieval period or crafting 3D robot creations while reading 'The Iron Man.' We also embrace the exciting world of Digital Art, where pupils experiment with innovative techniques like Pixel Pointillism, using programmes such as PaintZ on iPads.

Our Art Club is highly popular among our pupils, offering them the chance to develop skills like sewing or observational drawing.

We believe in providing our pupils with exposure to the rich world of art beyond the classroom. They have the opportunity to visit local galleries such as The National Gallery and The Tate, where they can appreciate and draw inspiration from some of the world's most remarkable collections of paintings.

Sport & Physical Activity

The importance of activity.

We understand that being active is essential for personal growth and self-expression. At Charterhouse Square School, sports and physical activities are about more than fitness; they’re opportunities for children to discover their strengths, build resilience, and learn the value of teamwork. With a commitment to active learning, our children participate in significantly more physical activities than most other prep schools.

We play around three times as much as state school primaries. Our children enjoy up to four hours of PE and sport each week – and that’s on top of the 40 minutes of exercise they get at lunchtime when we are permitted to use the garden in Charterhouse Square.

From Year 2 onwards, all of our children enjoy a weekly swimming session at Ironmonger Row Baths, a short walk away from the school. They will also take a short coach trip to enjoy the fantastic astroturf facilities at Coram’s Fields.

Specialist facilities and teachers.

Our pupils receive training from experienced and qualified coaches across a wide variety of sports, including football, hockey, netball, tag rugby, athletics, cricket, rounders, swimming, and tennis. By participating in these activities, they learn to set personal goals, support their peers, and appreciate the value of teamwork. Each session, whether in PE, aerobics, or team practice, is a chance for them to develop self-confidence and explore their individual interests.

Sports events are a cherished part of our school’s calendar, with our annual swimming gala in the autumn and whole-school sports day in July, offering our pupils the opportunity to showcase their growth and celebrate their achievements with family and friends. We also compete in inter-school athletics, football, netball, and swimming tournaments and host fixtures with local schools, creating memorable experiences for our pupils and their supporters.

Oracy

Building confidence through communication.

We believe that strong communication skills are essential for self-expression, personal growth, and future success. Oracy is a key part of our curriculum, empowering pupils to articulate their thoughts clearly, listen actively, and engage meaningfully with others. Through structured activities like debating, philosophy for children, and discussions on current affairs, our pupils explore complex topics, learning to think critically and present their ideas confidently.

Our pupils also participate in presentations on chosen subjects, giving them valuable experience in expressing their interests and perspectives. These activities build a strong foundation in public speaking, collaboration, and critical thinking - skills they draw upon in all areas of school life. In addition, pupils have the opportunity to serve as tour guides on Viewing Days, gaining practical experience in speaking confidently with unfamiliar adults and sharing their pride in our school.

To further prepare pupils for interviews and beyond, we emphasise oracy skills as essential tools for effective communication. We are immensely proud of the poise and confidence with which our pupils engage with both their peers and adults. Through oracy, our pupils develop the ability to communicate thoughtfully and authentically, enriching their self-expression and preparing them for success in all their future endeavours.
