Early Years: for children aged 3 - 5
Our staff in Early Years are committed to giving every child a wonderful start to school life.
As part of our early years education, every activity is planned so that the girls and boys can try things out for themselves, exploring and developing their capabilities along the way. We know that happy children make good learners so our early learning Nursery Room is designed to make learning as fun as possible for our youngest children.

Building a love of language and reading.
Cultivating a love of reading is a key feature of our literacy teaching in the Early Years, alongside developing fine motor skills for writing. Each child’s progress is closely monitored, enabling us to tailor our provision to their needs. As they learn individual phonics sounds, they will learn to blend and segment these to build their reading skills, and we introduce reading books when they are ready to benefit from them. We ensure that every child takes home a book each night to keep them stimulated and engaged, while continuously practising and expanding their vocabulary.
As a school, we adopt a text-based approach to literacy lessons, thoroughly exploring books linked to topics so that children can immerse themselves in the text. We use these texts to create focused activities that develop reading, comprehension, and writing skills. Each session also incorporates free-choice play, allowing children to explore their interests and skills in an engaging environment.
Alongside reading, we develop fine motor skills for writing through both play and more structured teaching. We guide the children on the technical aspects of letter formation and spelling, while also encouraging them to express themselves with confidence - the most important attribute we aim for them to develop during the Early Years.
